How Does a Root Canal Work?

Written By AccuCare Dental Centers, PC on July 13, 2021

Root Canal Treatment Every year, millions of root canals are performed in the United States. Although a root canal is a safe and routine procedure, you may be anxious if you need one. Understanding the process can help alleviate your nerves.

Why You Might Need a Root Canal

A root canal preserves a natural tooth that would otherwise require removal or fall out on its own due to infection.

Your tooth consists of three parts:

  • Enamel: A hard, mineral-rich outer shell.
  • Dentin: A porous material located beneath the enamel.
  • Pulp: A final layer below the dentin, made of nerves and blood vessels.

The pulp-filled inner cavity also contains the tooth root, which serves to anchor the tooth and connects it to the underlying bone.

When bacteria in the mouth reaches the tooth’s inner cavity, the pulp becomes infected. This can result in inflammation, greater sensitivity to heat and cold, and pain. The affected tooth may eventually fall out.

Usually, this only happens in cases of advanced decay, when bacteria have been able to eat through the enamel and dentin. This is why it’s so important to see your dentist regularly and get any cavities fixed promptly. Untreated, they are likely to worsen to the point that you need a root canal.

How Root Canal Treatments Work

Getting a root canal can save the infected tooth, avoiding the need for restorative dentistry measures like dental implants.

So, how is a root canal done? First, the dentist drills a small hole in the tooth. They then remove the infected pulp and clean and disinfect the tooth’s inner cavity. Finally, they seal the tooth off to prevent bacteria from reentering.

Depending on how damaged the tooth is, the dentist may install a crown for added stability. The entire procedure is done under anesthesia, ensuring the patient’s comfort.
